Why Torch Brazed Frames are More Responsive...

Schwinn built X-tra Lite LeTour lug frames are made of 18 gauge 1020 carbon steel tubing with its original temper, Stiffness and resiliency because it has been carefully torch brazed. The frame has been heated only where the tubes are brazed into the lugs. Many mass-produced bicycle frames are heated in ovens or salt solutions in their entirely, to over 1700 F, in order to melt the brazing material in the joints.

This can anneal the entire frame and changes its temper and resiliency. The result are unresponsice and "dead" riding characteristics in the finished bicycle. Torch brazing preserves the tubing's integrity for a lively ride and also permits better quality control for better riding performance.

Bicycle Motocross Racing ... the Growth of A Sport

Bicycle Motorcross racing is a blasting down a 200-foor straightaway, up and over a jump and into a hard hair pin turn with a berm that's like climbing a wall. You start jammin' and bunny-hop through a series of whoop-de-doo's and then it's the fight for the finish. A swoop inside through the last turn and you've aced out the field.

It's happening week after week throughout the country- at sanctioned or independent tracks, in forest preserves and even inside arenas. It started with kids on the west coast riding stripped down 20" Schwinn Sting-Ray bikes on the trails. They would charge through ravines and down hills- imitating the motorcycle motocross stars. BMX, however, quickly became a sport in its own right and the sport has swept the country.

BMX today is not a backyard activity. It has become a highly organized and carefully regulated sport- not unlike Little League or football leagues. Official sanctioning bodies such as the National Bicycle League (NBL), National Bicycle Association (NBA) or the American Bicycle Association (ABA) provide annual point standings, safety supervision and other details of the racing. They make certain that competition is fair and sportsmanlike. Problems are rare and competition is invigorating.

It isn't unusual to have several hundred riders turn out for a major national race. However, the turnout at local tracks sponsored by civic groups like the Jaycess or Optimist Clubs is always very good.

Parents, too, are swept up in the enthusiasm and big crowds are at nearly every race.

Many manufacturers are also behind the sport. Schwinn Bicycle Company has made sizeable investments in promoting and supporting BMX. Proper Bicycle Fit and Adjustment

The first step towards proper bicycle fit is selection of the proper frame. Schwinn bicycles come in a wide variety of sizes and most Schwinn lightweights are available with different frame sizes to ensure that the purchaser is able to buy a bicycle with a frame which is neither too large nor too small but just right.

A rider's proper frame size is usually the largest frame which he can comfortably straddle with both of his feet on the ground as in the illustration on left. Women can use the diamond style frame to determine the approximate size of the corresponding ladies' model bicycle. Proper bicyle fit is necessary for the utmost in safety and handling.

Once the proper frame size has been determined, the next step is to adjust the seat to its correct height. The most efficient and comfortable pedaling is accomplished when the rider's leg, while he is seated on bicycle, is not quite fully extended when the ball of the foot is on the pedal. The rider must be seated on the saddle and the pedal MUST be at the bottom position as shown in illustration on the right.

The handlebar stem should be adjusted to the same height as seat or slightly lower than the seat, as shown in the illustrations.

Note: On Schwinn bikes a maximum height marking appears both on the seatpost and handlebar stem.

The work exercise loads shown on the work load indicator can be converted to "kilopond meter per minute," which is the most widely used measurement of physical work performed in exercise programs. One kilopond meter is the amount of work required to lift one kilogram (2.2046 pounds) one meter (39, 37 inches) at normal gravity. Kilopond meters per minute are a measure to work against time can be converted to other terms of work measurement such as "foot pounds per minute," or "watts," or "horsepower." Schwinn Bicycle Company Limited Warranty Warranty

Effective March 1, 1979

Schwinn and Schwinn-Approved bicycles, parts and accessories (Except the ergoMetric Exerciser) are warranted to be free from defects in materials and workmanship... no time limit.

Notice:

The user assumes the risk of any personal injuries, damage to or failure of the bicycle and any other losses if Schwinn bicycles are used in any competitive event, including bicycle racing, or in bicycle motorcross, dirt biking or similar activities, or training for such competitive events or activities.

DO NOT USE Schwinn bicycles for stunt riding, ramp, jumping, acrobatics or similar activities, or with motors as power driven vehicles. This Warranty does not cover any personal injuries, damage to or failure of the bicycle or any other losses due to accident, misuse, neglect, abuse, normal wear, improper assembly or improper maintenance.

Free 30-Day Checkup

Each Schwinn Bicycle will be fully assembled by the Authorized Schwinn Dealer at time of purchase, and will be entitled to recieve a free 30-day Checkup by the same Authorized Schwinn Dealer within the first 30 days of operation...such checkup to include free replacement of any parts and accessories found to be defective and free inspection and adjustment of all functional parts and assemblies... but not including any repair due to accident, improper use, neglect, abuse, normal wear, improper assembly or improper maintenance.

As its option, Schwinn will... without charge... either provide a replacement of or repair any Schwinn or Schwinn-Approved part of accessory which is defective under the terms of this warranty. Dealer labor charges in installing replacement parts or accessories are not covered by this warranty after the Free 30-day checkup, except for any labor charges due to replacement of a defective frame within one year of original purchase at retail.

Repair or replacement of defective parts or accessories and those dealer charges specifies above shall be the sole remedy under this warranty, and In, No Event shall Schwinn be liable for incidental or consequential damages. Some States do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incedental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you.

This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state. See your Authorized Schwinn Dealer for service or replacement under the Schwinn Limited Warranty or write for assistance to the factory:
