Six-Day Racing

Boys, have you ever seen a Six-Day Bike Race? It is a thrilling specatable- daring riders hair raising sprints and jams, crashes and spills, thousands of spectators cheering their favorites.

Round and round they go on the littler saucer tracks, 10 to 14 laps to the mile, and one member of each two-men team must always be on the track riding, for six days and seven nights.

Six-Day Racing is not only a test of endurance and speed of the riders, but is the severest test that can be given a bicycle.

I have been the official mechanic at 6-Day Bike Races for over 25 years and have serviced every make of racing bicycle used. This past season, we had 18 to 20 Schwinn Paramount Racers on the track. What the boys call their No. 1 bikes have gone approximately 10, 000 miles each or a total of over 90,000 miles in the 13 races, and I have yet to replace a worn of defective part.

Not a single frame broke, and I honestly believe the strength of these frames saved the boys from serious injury many times, because we had an unusual number of bad spills during the season.

Schwinn Sports Bikes

Drop Bars, or racing handlebars as they are often called, make an astonishing difference in riding efficiency, adding power, speed and endurance most people never knew they possessed. It is this thrilling experience, a new discovery for most of us, that has led to the great popularity of sports bikes and much of the public's renewed interest in cycling for excercise and recreation.

More power! Drop bars allow the rider to lean forward at about a 45 degree angle when his hands are on the upper part of the handlebar and a little lower when his hands are on the "drops" or lower bar. This "crouch" position cuts down wind resistance and increases the rider's leverage on the pedals so he can go faster and farther with about half the effort required in the upright or erect position.

Doctors say the leaning forward position lessens weight on the spine, expands the chest and lungs and stregthens muscles in the arms and shoulders. Try it -- it's good for you!

This competition model Paramounts are built for speed and quick maneuverability, with a shorter wheelbase than touring bikes, so they ride more like a race car than a limousine- but at only 20 pounds for the Track Racer and 23 pounds for the Road Racer they've got the most "go" any bike can give.

Ladies' mixtie "step-through" frame

Colors: Black Sable, Frosty Blue, White, Strawberry Red, and Silver Mist.

Hand brazed of 4130 chrome-moly steel tubing for lightness of weight, these frames have internal lugs for extra strength. Model T29 has a men's front and a ladies' mixtie "step-through" rear frame. T32 has a double men's frame.

All Paramounts feature investment-cast lugs, hand-silver brazing and chrome-fork tips, built of Reynolds 531 double-butted tubing of your choice. Select a Campagnolo component group, or mix and match components from Shimano, SunTour or Avocet. Introducing the all new custom-tailored Paramount

The fine finish of the lugs show the care with which the tubes on each Paramount are joined. This touring Paramount easily carries a big load. An extra set of water bottle bosses, under the down tube, are used here to carry bottled fuel.

The unique derailleur configuration, featuring a modofied Campagnolo Rally rear dearailleur, combined two Campagnolo units for extra shifting capacity.

The bottom bracket of the Paramount is extra-strong to with stand stress. Note the brazed-on cable gluides and the triple plateau Campagnolo crank set.
